Program Highlights

Our surgical technology degree prepares you to play a vital role in medical care.

Surgical technologists are indispensable members of the operating room team.  They work under the direct supervision of a surgeon and work alongside nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure surgical procedures are conducted smoothly and safely.  The instrumentation, equipment and supplies necessary for surgical intervention are more sophisticated than ever and require specialized training and experience to operate properly.  The surgical technologist fills this critical role in all aspects of surgical intervention while simultaneously making sure the surgeon has the “right tool to do the job.” After graduation, you will have the knowledge base and skills to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certified Surgical Technologist exam and enter the workforce as an entry-level practitioner.

  • Hands on training begins on day one in our simulation labs.

  • Our curriculum provides classroom theory and hands-on experiences in compliance with the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 7th Edition taught by industry professionals with years of experience as practicing surgical technologists.

  • The program is designed to help you excel on the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification exam, ensuring you are ready to embark on your career as a Certified Surgical Technologist.

  • Our program has robust career support services including resume and cover letter building, interview preparation and job placement assistance.

Why Study Surgical Technology?

A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, pathophysiology, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of surgery. The surgical technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Currently, the need for surgical technologists is expanding to labor and delivery units, cardiac catheterization labs, outpatient surgery facilities and private physicians’ offices.

Curriculum

The Baker College AAS degree in surgical technology is a two-year, CAAHEP-accredited program consisting of 67 credit hours (29 prerequisites and 38 major requirements). Our curriculum includes microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures and clinical experiences.

Sample Courses

Surgical Pharmacology

Description
The course establishes a foundational understanding of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and the mechanisms of drug actions. Students will explore various drug classifications, their physiological effects, and their application in surgical settings. Emphasis will be placed on medication classifications, their effects on the body, safe administration practices, and their relevance to perioperative care. Students will understand the importance of pharmacological knowledge in the context of perioperative patient care, including considerations for specific patient populations and surgical specialties. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to safely handle medications, understand their effects on patients undergoing surgery, and contribute effectively to perioperative care, ensuring patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes. Special focus will be applied to anesthesia administration techniques and complications.

Surgical Procedures I

Description
This course allows students to explore the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms associated with conditions that require surgical intervention in general, obstetric and gynecological, genitourinary, otorhinolaryngological, and orthopedic surgery. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the specialized instrumentation, equipment, and supplies essential for diverse surgical procedures. The student will also analyze and discuss the sequential steps involved in different surgical procedures while emphasizing the critical role of surgical technologists in anticipating and supporting the surgical team and patient. This is a lecture course that meets for 60 contact hours. Must complete with a B- or better.

Surgical Technology Clinical I

Description
This clinical rotation provides hands-on experience in applying aseptic techniques, handling surgical instrumentation, and teamwork in a real-world operating room setting. Students will integrate classroom and lab knowledge to assist with preoperative preparation, intraoperative responsibilities, and postoperative tasks. Emphasis is placed on maintaining sterile technique, selecting and managing surgical instruments, and collaborating effectively with the surgical team. Through supervised practice, students will develop critical thinking, situational awareness, and problem-solving skills essential for supporting safe and efficient surgical procedures. Must complete with a B- or better.
