Why Earn a Master's in Nursing Education?

The Baker College Master of Science in Nursing Education strives to prepare nurses for leadership positions in administration (administrative track) or education (education track). Both tracks build upon the knowledge and skills nurses bring into the program, which is designed to meet the highest levels of nursing practice with an emphasis on the potential of each student.

The online master's in nursing education provides experienced professional nurses with the education and competencies needed to function in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

MSN Curriculum

The Baker College master's degree in nursing education is a two-year program consisting of 33 credit hours (24 hours of core courses and 9 hours of nursing administration). Our nursing curriculum includes leadership and advanced nursing practice roles, curriculum development, and a 90-hour practicum experience.

Advanced Nursing Practice Roles

Description
Students will understand the different advanced nursing roles and the educational and regulatory requirements for each role. The importance of open communication and collaboration within inter professional healthcare teams will be discussed including delegation of care, care coordination and conflict resolution strategies. Leadership theories within an ethical environment will be discussed. Student will complete 45 practice hours (1 credit)

Curriculum Development for Nursing Education

Description
Students explore the development of nursing education curricula with a focus on evolving faculty and student roles, diverse learning needs, and ethical considerations. Students will analyze key components such as mission, vision, and program outcomes, and integrate nursing standards and accreditation requirements. The course emphasizes applying learning theories to create inclusive and engaging learning experiences, fostering a culture of civility, and utilizing information resources and technology. Additionally, students will investigate the incorporation of service learning to connect theoretical knowledge with practical, community-based experiences. Student will complete 45 practice hours (1 credit). 3 Semester hours.

Graduate Practicum

Description
Requires students to work directly with a preceptor to examine and deepen knowledge in the chosen specialty. The major focus of the practicum experience is to synthesis knowledge and demonstrate skills to assure program outcomes. Note: Students are responsible for identifying preceptors and clinical practicum site in consultation with course faculty. This should be an extension of work begun in NUR 6220, Clinical Practicum Preparation. 90 practice hours (2 credits) required.

Additional Requirements

This nursing education program requires students to hold an unencumbered license as a registered nurse (RN) in the United States, District of Columbia or U.S. territories or an unencumbered license as an RN in Canada. Must be a graduate of an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited BSN program and meet our additional graduate school requirements.

To be admitted to the MSN Education program, applicants must:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or BS with a major in nursing from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited program.
  • Have an active, unencumbered RN license in the U.S., District of Columbia, U.S. territories, or Canada. U.S. nursing licenses will be verified via NURSYS; Canadian applicants must submit proof of licensure.
  • Meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale). GRE or GMAT scores are optional and not required.
  • Submit transcripts, a resume, and a 500–1000 word essay as part of the application.
  • Current undergraduate students may apply after earning 90 semester credits. If they have a GPA of 2.75 or higher, the essay and resume requirements will be waived.

Yes, the MSN program is fully online, offering flexibility for working nurses. However, students must complete a nursing education practicum, which requires in-person teaching experiences at a healthcare or academic institution.

Additionally, beginning in Fall 2025, we are increasing clinical hours to better align with practice standards and accreditation requirements. The revised MSN curriculum expands clinical practice experiences to enhance competency development and align with the 2021 AACN Essentials. Clinical hours have significantly increased to ensure students gain comprehensive, hands-on experience in real-world settings:

  • MSN Education Track: Increased from 135 to 495 clinical hours

These expanded clinical experiences provide progressive skill development, allowing students to apply knowledge in academic, leadership, and healthcare settings. Clinical hours are structured to ensure the practical application of advanced nursing roles, supporting both professional readiness and future doctoral education.

No, Baker College’s master’s in nursing education does not require a thesis. Instead, students complete a capstone project and practicum, where they apply their learning in real-world educational settings.

Yes, students must complete a nursing practicum, which involves teaching experiences in a clinical or academic setting. This allows students to apply teaching strategies, curriculum development, and student evaluation techniques in a supervised environment.

In many cases, yes. Students may be able to complete their practicum at their current workplace, provided it meets master's degree in nursing education program requirements and they have an approved preceptor.
