Fuel your future with a certificate in diesel service technology.

Looking for an education that can open the door to a wide range of job opportunities? With a certificate in diesel service technology from ADI, you’ll be qualified to work on a vehicle’s electrical system, make engine repairs, or perform routine maintenance on some of the biggest vehicles on the road. Our Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master certified technicians/instructors will prepare you to take five ASE certification exams and help you become an ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certified Technician

  • Learn diesel engine theory, engine diagnostics, transmissions, brakes, preventive maintenance, and more.
  • Train in a state-of-the-art, 43,000-square-foot facility outfitted with the same tools and equipment that professionals use on the job.
  • Get hands-on instruction from experienced ASE-certified professionals in small classes that allow you the attention you deserve.

Why study diesel service technology?

Qualified diesel service technicians are some of the most sought-after professionals in their industry. These in-demand experts are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing buses, trucks, and other medium/heavy-duty vehicles. Their work is varied; they may work on a vehicle’s electrical system, make engine repairs, or do routine maintenance. Continuing advances in medium/heavy-duty truck technologies have made it essential to have up-to-date training and skills. Our diesel service technology certificate program will prepare you to take the following ASE certification exams:

  • T2 - Diesel Engines
  • T3 - Drive Train
  • T4 - Brakes
  • T5 - Suspension and Steering
  • T6 - Electrical / Electronic Systems
  • T8 - Preventive Maintenance and Inspection (PMI)

Curriculum

ADI’s diesel service technology certificate program is a two-semester program consisting of 32 credit hours. Our curriculum includes diesel electrical/electronic systems, diesel engine repair, and heavy duty brake service.

Sample Courses

Diesel Electrical/Electronic Systems I

Description
The course will focus on basic electronic fundamentals. The students are introduced to wiring and circuit diagrams, circuit protection, switches, relays, solenoids and electrical/electronic components. With the understanding of the fundamentals, students will complete the course with batteries, starting and charging systems. Students must complete this course with a grade of C or better in order to count toward the Certificate or Associate Degree program in Diesel Services Technology. Additionally, to be eligible to earn a grade in this course, students must complete a minimum of 85% of the required lecture and lab hours. 30 hours of lecture and 60 hours of lab are required.

Diesel Engine Repair

Description
This course expands the basic engine skills learned in DSL 1010 and provides the students the opportunity to grow their knowledge with modern heavy-duty diesel engines. All engine systems will be examined with a deeper dive into function and failure analysis. So not only will students be dissembling and assembling engines, they will also be introduced to troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, along with analyzing failed parts. Engine electronics will be introduced so students can get a jump on current engine management platforms. This course prepares students to take the T2 ASE exam. To be eligible to earn a grade in this course, students must complete a minimum of 85% of the required lecture and lab hours. 30 hours of lecture and 60 hours of lab are required.

Heavy Duty Brake Service

Description
This course focuses on the operation and repair of the heavy-duty brakes including air and hydraulic systems. The course will cover air systems including compressors, tanks, lines and valves. The students will learn drum and disc foundation brakes and along with ABS systems for both air and hydraulic brakes. Disassembly and assembly of wheel ends will also be taught to the industry standard of TMC Recommended Procedure, RP618. This course prepares students to take the T4 ASE exam. To be eligible to earn a grade in this course, students must complete a minimum of 85% of the required lecture and lab hours. 15 hours of lecture and 90 hours of lab are required.

Additional requirements

For courses that include a consecutive course, Electrical/Electronic Systems 1, students must pass with the grade of C or better in order to continue toward earning a certificate.

Accreditation

The Diesel Service Technology certificate program is accredited by the ASE Education Foundation, 1503 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Suite 401, Leesburg, VA 20176.

This program is offered in-person on our campus in Owosso. Our students come from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and many other surrounding states.
